Macaulay School Council 2009 - 2010 |
Who? What? Why?
The mandate of a School Council is to accomplish three main objectives. The council is in place to help to:
- stimulate meaningful parent and community involvement in the school;
- to participate in the school improvement planning process;
- to provide advice to the Principal and the School Board.
The Ontario Education Improvement Commission (EIC) describes results of research on the importance of a parent’s involvement in this quote below.
“Parent involvement is one of the most significant factors contributing to a child’s success in school. When parents are involved in their children’s education, the level of student achievement increases.”
The Macaulay School Council (SAC) is one way of getting involved in your child’s education.
Membership on a school council also benefits the individuals involved. It allows the parent to feel like an important partner in the education system. Parents feel valued by administration and teachers. They also enjoy the wisdom and good company of other parent members of their council.
I would like to thank all of the members of Macaulay’s council for their

Fundraising
The Macaulay School Fundraisers is a group operating separately from School Council. The Fundraisers, as a group of parents and teachers, are mandated to focus on coordinating fundraising events. The proceeds from these successful events are then distributed as directed from the results of a parent survey.
By establishing as a separate group, the Fundraisers could ensure planning and the expedited spending of the proceeds without presenting at SC meetings. This has proved to be a highly successful model.
Feeding the Mind
It is good to know that many children at Macaulay can count on starting their day right with healthy food options provided by our Snack Program. An average of 40 children a day regularly use the program. The program is run by parent volunteers.
Opportunities and Initiatives
Ross Jewiss has presented interesting information to all parents through his regular newsletters home. Details of this information are often reviewed and clarified in more detail at council meetings. Parents can be assured that your fellow parents on SC question issues from staffing decisions to revisions on field trip policies.
Good news is also shared at SC meetings such as enhanced classroom learning opportunities.
